Dr. Joseph Shanahan is a distinguished medical professional certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, specializing in Rheumatology. As a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, his practice in Durham, North Carolina, reflects his commitment to delivering comprehensive and expert care. Dr. Shanahan earned his medical degree from the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, distinguishing himself as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and receiving the Angelo P. Angelides Award for Excellence in Medicine. His extensive training includes internship and residency in Internal Medicine, as well as a fellowship in Rheumatology at Duke University Medical Center, where he served as Chief Fellow during his final year.

Prior to establishing his own practice, Dr. Shanahan contributed his expertise as an Associate at Carolina Arthritis Associates in Wilmington. Concurrently, he holds the position of Assistant Consulting Professor in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Shanahan's commitment to advancing medical knowledge is evident through his co-authorship of numerous articles and book chapters. He has played key roles as a principal- and sub-investigator in clinical research studies, exploring the latest developments in rheumatology. His contributions extend to serving as a reviewer for esteemed medical journals, including the American College of Rheumatology Abstracts and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Dr. Shanahan's multifaceted expertise positions him as a leader in the field, dedicated to providing exemplary care and advancing the understanding of rheumatic conditions.
