Dr. Joseph Shanahan

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with additional certifications in Rheumatology and a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, Dr. Joseph Shanahan is a highly skilled and experienced specialist providing comprehensive care at his practice in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Shanahan received his medical degree from the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Angelo P. Angelides Award for Excellence in Medicine. After graduation, Dr. Shanahan completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine, as well as a fellowship in Rheumatology, at Duke University Medical Center, serving as Chief Fellow for his final year.

Before beginning his own practice, Dr. Shanahan was an Associate at Carolina Arthritis Associates in Wilmington. In addition to his practice duties, he also currently serves as an Assistant Consulting Professor in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at Duke University Medical Center.

Throughout his medical training and practice experience, Dr. Shanahan has co-authored several articles and book chapters, and has been a principal- and sub-investigator on clinical research studies on the latest developments in the field of rheumatology. He has also served as a reviewer for leading medical journals, including the American College of Rheumatology Abstracts and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Dr. Shanahan is currently a member of the Advisory Board of Actelion Pharmaceuticals.

Michelle Dowdall, PA-C

Michelle Dowdall is a certified Physician Assistant who has been in practice since 2000. She completed her PA training and received a Master's Degree in the Science of Medicine from Western Michigan Univerisity in Kalamazoo, MI. Prior to this, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana.

Prior to coming onto staff at Shanahan Rheumatology, Michelle has practiced in the areas of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery, which has enabled her to develop expertise in management of complex musculoskeletal issues. She has numerous years of experience evaluating and treating patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She has also worked as a co-investigator and study coordinator on numerous research studies.

Dr. Tegan Magsam, PharmD

Dr. Magsam is a clinical pharmacist practitioner and board certified ambulatory care pharmacist. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Tulsa before moving to Chapel Hill, where he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

Dr. Magsam provided care at Moses Cone Hospital, where he completed residency training, as well as UNC Health Care System prior to joining Shanahan Rheumatology. He has experience providing clinical pharmacy services in focus areas including primary care, cardiology, and inpatient acute care. He is also passionate about teaching aspiring health care professionals through both didactic lectures and experiential activities.

In his free time, Dr. Magsam enjoys travelling, running, attending live music events, and spending time at the lake.


Clinic Coordinator

Marissa was born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia. After completing her undergraduate and graduate degrees in South Carolina and Ohio, Marissa and her husband moved to Raleigh in 2017. Marissa is a flutist and enjoys playing and teaching the flute. She also loves reading, hiking, and spending time with her husband, Matt, and her rescue dog, Bailey Blair.

Farrah first aspired to work in the medical field after a Kindergarten field trip to the local hospital. Although she was born and raised in NC, she spent fourteen years in Jacksonville, Florida. She is a married, proud mother of two. Farrah greatly enjoys the beach, Disney World and spending as much time as she can with her family!

Hannah was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. Following in the footsteps of her parents, she attended North Carolina State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences concentration in Human Biology and a minor in Nutrition. She loves working in the medical field and aspires to go to medical school one day. In her free time, she likes to go to the beach, spend time doing outdoor activities, and hang out with family and friends.


Medical Assistant

Sydney was born and raised in Raleigh. She attended the University of South Carolina where she earned a degree in Public Health. She is now applying to medical schools and hopes to one day be a doctor! In her free time, Sydney enjoys playing soccer (go Man United!) and spending time with her two dogs, Archibald and Zoey.


Medical Assistant

Taylor was born and raised in Lowell, Michigan. After 17 years of residing there, she moved to Naples, Florida, where she fell in love with the beach and had a permanent tan all year round. While there, she completed her undergraduate degree in nutrition science. Seven years later, she decided to move to North Carolina to be closer to family. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family and enjoys being outdoors.
