Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with additional certifications in Rheumatology and a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, Dr. Joseph Shanahan is a highly skilled and experienced specialist providing comprehensive care at his practice in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Dr. Shanahan received his medical degree from the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Angelo P. Angelides Award for Excellence in Medicine. After graduation, Dr. Shanahan completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine, as well as a fellowship in Rheumatology, at Duke University Medical Center, serving as Chief Fellow for his final year.
Before beginning his own practice, Dr. Shanahan was an Associate at Carolina Arthritis Associates in Wilmington. In addition to his practice duties, he also currently serves as an Assistant Consulting Professor in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at Duke University Medical Center.
Throughout his medical training and practice experience, Dr. Shanahan has co-authored several articles and book chapters, and has been a principal- and sub-investigator on clinical research studies on the latest developments in the field of rheumatology. He has also served as a reviewer for leading medical journals, including the American College of Rheumatology Abstracts and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Dr. Shanahan is currently a member of the Advisory Board of Actelion Pharmaceuticals.
Michelle Dowdall is a certified Physician Assistant who has been in practice since 2000. She completed her PA training and received a Master's Degree in the Science of Medicine from Western Michigan Univerisity in Kalamazoo, MI. Prior to this, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana.
Prior to coming onto staff at Shanahan Rheumatology, Michelle has practiced in the areas of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery, which has enabled her to develop expertise in management of complex musculoskeletal issues. She has numerous years of experience evaluating and treating patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She has also worked as a co-investigator and study coordinator on numerous research studies.
Physician Assistant CJ Paarz-Largay is a nationally certified physician assistant who has been practicing medicine since 1991. She completed her physician assistant training at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. In 2005, she went on to receive her master’s degree in science in clinical research from Campbell University. CJ has experience as a sub-investigator and research coordinator on several clinical trials.
Prior to coming onto staff at Shanahan Rheumatology, CJ has practiced in a private gynecology and women’s health clinic in New Bern, NC, the Durham County Public Health Department, Internal Medicine and Urgent Care at Kaiser Permanente in Raleigh, NC, Occupational Health at GlaxoWelcome, Adult Bone Marrow Transplant at Duke University, and Interventional Radiology at Duke University. She is well versed at caring for patients with a multitude of medical issues and concerns. When CJ is not taking care of patients, she enjoys staying active and spending time with her husband, her horse, and their dogs.
Amanda Long, B.A.
Amanda Long was born in New York City and raised in Charlotte. She graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington where she majored in Education and English. In her free time she enjoys playing tennis, reading, watching movies, and spending time at the beach. She thinks Shanahan Rheumatology is pretty awesome.
Rasheena Brown, RN, BSN
Clinical Research Supervisor
Rasheena was born and raised here in Raleigh. She graduated from East Carolina University where she majored in Nursing. Although her experience has been oncology, Rasheena comes to us with over 8 years of research experience and is very excited to work with Dr. Shanahan. In her free time, Rasheena loves spending time traveling with friends and family.
Clinical Research Coordinator
Sam was born in Syracuse New York and raised in Cary. She graduated from North Carolina State University where she majored in Human Biology. In her free time she enjoys golfing and traveling. In the office she enjoys working closely with patients enrolled in various clinical trials. She thinks Shanahan Rheumatology is the best.
Patient Services Coordinator
Patient Services Coordinator Renata was born in upstate NY but has been a resident of NC for most of her life. She has been in the adminstrative field of medicine for 10 + years. She enjoys working in the healthcare field and thinks Shanahan Rheumatology is great place for its patients and staff.
Gena Ayn Harris Byrd
Gena is a Certified Nursing Assistant and Medical Technician who has been certified since 2006. She completed her Nursing Assistant training at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh North Carolina and her Phlebotomy and Medical Technician Programs at Providence Training Institute, also in Raleigh. In the fall of 2006, she went on to receive her Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Shaw University in Raleigh and in 2011 she received her Master's degree in Sociology with a concentration in Community Corrections and Clinical Medical Research in Corrective Settings from Kaplan University in Iowa.
Prior to coming onto staff at Shanahan Rheumatology, Gena has worked in a private dental technology lab, multiple nursing homes in Raleigh as well as home health care, and the Wake County Public Health Department in Raleigh. When Gena is not performing a multitude of tasks at the office, she enjoys staying fit, being a new mom to her son Ezra, and wife to her husband Dennis.
Melissa Hughes, LPN
I am originally from Georgia.I have been an LPN for over 20 years,and have worked in alot of speciality areas and family practice, I also served in the Military. I live in the Apex area with my husband and I have three adult children and two wonderful grandsons. I enjoy working in the medical field. In my spare time, when I\'m not watching my grandsons, I like to read and take mini vacations with my husband. I am very happy to be working with the staff at Shanahan Rheumatology they make you feel very welcome.
Maricel Bayer, LPN
Hi, you can call me Cel. I have been an LPN for over 4 years, I worked in a Long term care and a home health clinician prior to joining SRI. I love working with people from different walks of life. I have a BS in Information Technology that I received prior to moving to the US in 2002.I completed my LPN in 2008 at Bladen Community College. I completed my graduate certificate in Health Informatics in 2012 from East Carolina University and am currently working towards my RN degree. Every spring and fall I commit at least 3 weekends to doing volunteer work for the Miracle League of the Triangle every. I love to travel and do anything outdoor.
